Anticipation..

So, it's the second day back in Uni today. The house is full. Work, revision, practice. Everyone's buzzing around doing something.

To think that I will be done in a months time is scary. A new chapter of my life will begin when this one ends. I wonder what will be in store for me.

I really wish I had more to say - which I do - I just need more time to actually say it. I guess I need to find a topic to discuss about. Suggestions perhaps?

Need to find some paper and pull some ideas out of a hat :P

HUGE GAP FAIL

I realise that I've not been active here AT ALL. I've not forgotten about this blog but man, university has made me unbelievably busy.

My checklist:

1. Dissertation: DONE :)

2. Piano Programme note: In the process

3. Music Therapy Reflective Anaylsis (1k words): NEED TO DO MORE

4. Music Therapy Case Study Presentation: Got some done but, not finished.

5. MANG 3052 Group Essay: my part DONE. Every one elses... Pending -.-

6. MANG 3052 Group Presentation: NOT STARTED - I've NO idea what to do fr it man. Honestly.

I promise, I'll blog more with a few thoughts that have come into mind.

Addictions

So recently, certain people have been playing 'Tetris Battle' - me included but thankfully, I've been able to control my playing habits :)

The motivation for this post came about coz I was aware of, let's call her, Jane, playing Tetris the whole time (afternoon and night) whilst I was doing work.

I know of people who have worser addictions to gaming. Let's put this into perspective first. Here's a definition given by good old Wiki:

"Video game addiction, or more broadly video game overuse, is excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life. Instances have been reported in which users play compulsively, isolating themselves from, or from other forms of, social contact and focusing almost entirely on in-game achievements rather than broader life events."

Also, here are a few characteristics on addictive behaviour:

There are many common characteristics among the various addictive behaviors:

1. The person becomes obsessed (constantly thinks of) the object, activity, or substance.

Yup, Jane is somewhat obsessed with Tetris Battle. She complains when she's out of 'battery life' on Tetris. She'll do anything to get some more - including doing surveys...

2. They will seek it out, or engage in the behaivor even though it is causing harm (physical problems, poor work or study performance, problems with friends, family, fellow workers).

Jane doesn't do work. Well, for 30 minutes top... out of 1000000000 hours game time.

3. The person will compulsively engage in the activity, that is, do the activity over and over even if he/she does not want to and find it difficult to stop.

From point 1, yup, she is constantly playing it. Constantly.

4. Upon cessation of the activity, withdrawal symptoms often occur. These can include irritability, craving, restlessness or depression.

She got bored straight after she lost her 'battery' and felt irritable. In fact, she started playing another game... on another device. LOL.

5. The person does not appear to have control as to when, how long, or how much he or she will continue the behavior (loss of control). (They drink 6 beers when they only wanted one, buy 8 pairs of shoes when they only needed a belt, ate the whole box of cookies, etc).

6. He/she often denies problems resulting from his/her engagement in the behavior, even though others can see the negative effects.

HAHAHA. This point is so true. She denies her playing the game at times, when it is blatantly clear that she is. I can hear the keyboard -.-

7. Person hides the behavior after family or close friends have mentioned their concern. (hides food under beds, alcohol bottles in closets, doesn't show spouse credit card bills, etc).

I'm not sure about this but she somewhat mentioned it to a family member. In any case, we tried an intervention. She didn't want to hear it. HAHA.

8. Many individuals with addictive behaviors report a blackout for the time they were engaging in the behavior (don't remember how much or what they bought, how much the lost gambeling, how many miles they ran on a sore foot, what they did at the party when drinking)

9. Depression is common in individuals with addictive behaviors. That is why it is important to make an appointment with a physician to find out what is going on.

10. Individuals with addictive behaviors often have low self esteem, feel anxious if the do not have control over their environment, and come from psychologically or physically abusive families.

Jane doesn't come from a bad family. Her self-esteem, well. Can't say much about it. Could be due to a lot of work cropping up.

So why do people become addicted to games? Some causes that crop up is that they find better beneficial gains on these games than in real-life. This would link to some possible psychological causes. Who can blame you though, if life isn't smooth sailing at the moment but you know you can excel and totally own in a game? I'd keep on playing. I quote: "I've gone up a rank! My life has purpose now!" Honestly, if playing games when you get up and before you sleep... don't you think you might need some sort of... life?

In the case of Jane, well. I guess she's just so used to having it in her life - even if for a few days. Her attitude towards always winning might be taken into account. She NEEDS to be good, really good at something. So, I guess this Tetris Battle thing, seeing that you're playing against other people, you've a 50/50 chance of winning. You win, you're happy... you lose, you get frustrated and try to 'get back your star'.

In any case, it's hilarious watching Jane play or any other person who has an addiction to games, especially once you take it away from them:)

The digital world..

Seeing that I've not put up ANYTHING on this blog for God know how long... I think it's time to start blogging again. Not that I actually have any readers but, I'd like to think some one is out there reading this regardless :)

I'm in the midst of doing my dissertation which looks at consumer behaviour in digital music. Basically, I'm trying to find a model that is suitable for the younger generation i.e. the teenagers and university students.

Quite happy with some of the results that I'm getting, though, some answers are hilarious!

The qualitative research questions really do help - I've received some amazing answers and I'd like to thank those people, whoever you are.... due to the anonymity of the questionnaire, I literally can't, lol.

But seriously though, what do people think will happen to music in the near future? The shift from physical music i.e. CDs - which most likely be extinct soon - perhaps - to every thing digital.

Funny how almost every thing is online. We are the E-Generation after all. We're so dependent on the Internet, it's hilarious! The 'Internet First' behaviour we have adapted i.e. we go to the internet for everything. Want to know a good recipe for lemon chicken? GOOGLE. What does 'pulchritudinous' mean? GOOGLE. What flights are cheapest for a holiday to the Caribbeans? GOOGLE.

You can see how everything has just turned into internet-dependent. In one sense, you can say that we have control of things. We need not go to an agency to book holidays, we can do it ourselves. Buying products online, customers are sharing their views and recommendations about certain products. WE control the company.

Facebook friends.. are they really?

I read an article about Facebook friends. The article can be found here.

I thought about this before I joined the social network. Previously, I had a Friendster and Hi5 account. I decided to delete them as I was tired of using social networks - my friends made me a Facebook account and I have stuck to it ever since.

My entry is not about the psychology of joining a social network, but the thought of what online 'friends' are.

Here's a scenario. Let's say you went to an event and you've just met someone. You talk for a bit and soon after you switch names and mention that "I'll add you up on Facebook". The next day you see a friend request from that person, you accept it et voila, they're your friend on Facebook. However, do you truly consider that person as a friend?

I've seen people with more than 1,000 friends on Facebook and I shake my head in disapproval. Out of the 1,000 people, who do you really talk to? Who do you really take notice of? Sure Facebook has the Livefeed where every thing about every one is shown but, what real interest does it have on you?

As the aforementioned article states:

Aristotle claims that there are three types of friendship:

Friendship based on utility.
Friendship based on pleasure.
Friendship based on virtue.

So where do Facebook friends come under? We could say that some friends fall under one of the categories i.e. I could have a friend from one of the society's I've joined at University and we do not communicate outside of the society and purely contact each other for societal reasons, I'd have a utility friendship. Though, does it mean that I would need to have that person on Facebook? It's not like I would need to know what they're having for lunch, thinking about at the time, etc.

To some extent, we could say that our views on Friendship are of C.S Lewis's:

Friendship arises out of mere Companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden). The typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, 'What? You too? I thought I was the only one'....

Sounds familiar doesn't it? We base our friendships on common interests between parties. Some go further than that to grow into a closer relationship, some stop after a certain period of time.

Our true friends are ones we don't need to contact through Facebook. It would be difficult to have a friendship based on virtue - which is the highest form of friendship according to Aristotle -on Facebook or on any other social network for that matter.

I guess it's time to look through the 'Friends List' again...

My friend shared this note on Facebook. I've decided to do the same. I think it's beautiful and every one should learn from it. This excerpt was from a book she found in the Prayer room.

Background : teacher asks a student what he learnt. He replied 8 things and these are the 8 things - I typed exactly as was written in the book :

Start of excerpt:

1 )I have noticed that people used to keep every valuable thing they possess. Then I reflected upon the Qur’anic verse:

“What is with you must vanish: what is with Allah will endure” [An-Nahl:96]

So I decided to keep my valuable things with Allah, Most High

2) I have observed that everybody has a beloved one, but no beloved one could accompany the lover to the grave. Therefore, I have decided to love good deeds, which would accompany me to my grave.

3) I have reflected upon the Glorious Qur’anic verse that reads:

“And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord’s (tribunal) and has restrained (their) soul from lower desires” [An Nazi’at]

Accordingly I have exerted myself to steer clear of whims until myself has accustomed to obeying Allah, Most High.

4) I have looked at people’s concern of property and authority. Then I pondered on Allah’s saying in the Glorious Qur’an:

“Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (He who is) the most righteous of you” [Al-Hujurat:13]

Consequently I concerned myself with consciousness and fear of Allah, Most High so as to attain honour in this world and the Hereafter.

5) I have noticed the spread of envy amongst people and reflected on the Qur’anic verse:

“It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in the life of this world” [Az-Zukhruf:32]

Therefore, I kept away from envy.

6) I have observed the promulgation of enmity amongst the people, and then recited the Qur’anic verse:

“Verily Satan is an enemy to you: so treat him as an enemy” [Fatir:6]

So I refrained from their enmity and insisted on maintaining enmity only to Satan.

7) I have looked at people’s humiliation in earning livelihood, then I pondered on the Qur’anic verse:

“There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance dependeth on Allah” [Hud:6]

Therefore, I concerned myself with carrying out Allah’s Duties and put my trust on Him in earning livelihood.

8) I have observed that people depend on their trade, manufacture and health. Yet I decided to rely only on Allah Most High.

Consideration...

Have you ever experienced something so strange and annoying that you have NO IDEA what was going on in that persons mind?

I just did.

Last night.

At 00:35.

I'd rather not say names.. So let's say Sally, for some reason started banging on her radiator... past midnight... when every one was trying to sleep. I KNEW the neighbours were going to knock on our door (which they did) and refused to answer to them. I asked someone else to deal with it cause I always have when it's not my fault.

It doesn't help that you're disrupting your housemates AND your neighbours.

Why would you do that?

Resulted in bad sleep and fatigue. Sigh sigh.

InsyAllah next week will be better:)

Month of Dhul-Hijjah

Assalamu alaikum warahmahtullah wabarakatuhu (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you all),

As you may be aware the month of Dhul-Hijjah 1431 started on Monday 8/11/10 and thus Eid-ul-Adha is expected on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (Tuesday 16/11/10) with the day of Arafah on Monday 15 November 2010.

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) has said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days..." (Bukhari) so strive hard to perform as many righteous acts during these days.

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) has also said: "There are no days greater in the sight of Allaah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite Tahleel ("La ilaaha ill-Allaah"), Takbeer ("Allaahu akbar") and Tahmeed ("Alhamdulilah") abunduntly."(Ahmad).

One of the best acts of worship a muslim can do is fast for the sake of Allah which in addition will multiply the reward of his good deeds in that state; "Allaah the almighty says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it."(Bukhari)

These ten days include the day of Arafah on which Allaah perfected His Religion. Fasting on this day will expiate for the sins of two years (those committed in the preceding year and those that will be committed in the following) (An-Nisaa’i, Abu Dawood).

Hence dear respected brothers and sisters, hasten to perform good deeds and fast for the sake of Allah. These days only appear annually and nobody knows if they will see the following day never mind the next year.

WAllahu alam (and Allah knows Best)

Procrastination.....

As students we try to keep a balance between our academic and social life. Every day you tend to hear people say, "I'm normally free but I've a back log of work" or "I'm so stressed! I've 4 assignments due in on Friday!". You start thinking to yourself, isn't it obvious that you clearly need to do some work? Yes. So why do people put off work? Would you consider them as being lazy for not doing it when they should have done or is it having bad organizational skills?

Here are what Dr. Ferrari, an associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago Psychology doctors have said about the subject:

Procrastination is not a problem of time management or of planning. Procrastinators are not different in their ability to estimate time, although they are more optimistic than others. "Telling someone who procrastinates to buy a weekly planner is like telling someone with chronic depression to just cheer up,". So really, time management is not the problem. So what is? Why do we procrastinate?

There's more than one flavor of procrastination. People procrastinate for different reasons. Dr. Ferrari identifies three basic types of procrastinators:

arousal types, or thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush.
avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.
decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events.

So is it that procrastinators take time to do things because of the above-mentioned 'flavours' are Dr. Ferrari gives us? Other articles seem to agree. I have friends who are arousal types - can only focus when the deadline is absolutely tight, thus doing things last minute. Though, their reason is because they can only focus then as there is a need to do work, other times, they don't feel the pressure. This, funnily enough, is called the Student Syndrome(Eliyahu G., 1997).

On the other hand, could we argue that a little procrastination is good for us? After all, we do need that extra factor to get us going!

Creatures of Habit

Have you always wondered why you do the same things over and over? How you almost always walk the same route to uni, grab the same sandwich, sit in the same spot in a certain lecture theatre? How we walk, talk, move our hands. Every thing?

This thought occured to me during many-a-times but I never really looked into it as much - until now.

"One of the largest elements of this knowledge of human nature if an understanding of the part which habit plays in our lives and of the means we have at hand to direct this great force." (Murdock K.) We do the same things repetitively and on the occasion, we're not conscious of our actions. But why?

I just found it interesting how we find comfort in knowing the end result of something you constantly do. I always try to get into the same piano practice room, for example, because I like the piano's quality when comparing to the others. Or is that really the reason? I enjoy playing on that piano because I'm used to the sound it projects, the touch of it - playing a new piano sometimes can be off-putting due to the unfamiliarity of touch and sound.

"The better part of the behavioural repertoire is frequently exhibited in the same physical and social environment and has taken on a habitual character. (e.g. James, 1890; Ouellette & Wood, 1998; Triandis, 1980) These habits performed are useful in that they enable one to perform one's action in a mindless fashion". (Aarts H. 2000) This article really talks about how we do things without thinking so that we can spend more time learning and making new habits (or other new thought processes that are needed to be thought of consciously).

Thus is doing a certain action automatically etched into our minds because we've done it so routinely that our brain has no need to thoroughly think about it? Is it because we do not like going outside our 'bubble of comfort' that we stick to a routine that we're familiar with?

I guess it's like the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. You'll never know what will happen if you would have done things differently - "And that has made all the difference" (Frost R.) [If you've not read that poem, I suggest you do. It is a pretty meaningful one at that. You can read it here]

I made my very first home-made burger patty:) and Alhamdullillah, it was YUMMY=) not as good as mummy's but then again, nothing beats mummy's cooking. It's a general fact anyways to all mummys.

I watched this movie recently and it made me fear of the society that I'm living with today. The Internet Generation has it's costs and benefits. The dangers of the internet and how easy information can be gained is shown in this movie. Also, the actions that society is responsible for makes you wonder whether we are safe or not. The dependency that we have on the internet is so great, from books, to music, to videos, we forget we are giving out our personal information that could potentially be used for research and marketing strategies.

In any case, the movie has a tech-savvy internet predator is displaying his graphic murders on his own website -- and the fate of each of his tormented captives is left in the hands of the public: the more hits his site gets, the faster his victims die. The phrase I'd like to emphasize here is: Left in the hands of the public. Throughout the movie, the number of hits the site gets increases exponentially. This should be worrying. What does this tell you about us?

Why would be want to participate in such horrendous act? Obviously this is just a movie but this situation is likely to happen in real life. Think about the number of times you watch a Youtube video because someone asked you too, or because you were curious? Doesn't matter what the content was but when you think about it, this does happen. In this case, 'Curiousity kills the Cat" - to make things even more morbid, the movie begins with the predator killing a kitten!

In relation to the movie, it shows how people are subconsciously killers - "the number of hits the site gets, the faster the victims die". Our 'animal-like instinct to want to kill show (though, the difference between Us, humans and animals is that we do not act upon it -contradictory to this however are the murderers and killers who do kill).

I keep talking about how people steal things that are intangible, because, how can it be stealing when you're not stealing something solid, something you can hold. You wouldn't go out and steal a bar of chocolate or a piece of jewelery because these are items that you can see (except the bar of chocolate after you've devoured it;D).

My lectures of stealing intangible 'objects' are usually related to digital music and how people 'take' music from various Peer-to-Peer (P2P) websites.. However, this article took it to a whole new level.

I don't know if this is for real or not but, honestly, people stealing items off Facebook from Pet Society homes? Is this thief for real? Out of all things to steal. I guess we've virtual thefts nowadays.

You are beautiful

Christina Aguilera's song, "Beautiful" came into mind when I was thinking of this topic. To me the song shows how people can be affected by how we are judged by others within our society. Every one tries to conform; however, we all know that there will be a few black sheep or herds of black sheep amongst us. In the song she shows a few different stereotypes that we usual associate with- weight: the anorexic girl, appearance: the skinny boy who wanted to buff up, the goth- see how I'm already stereotyping?- on the bus. She tells us to be our own individual and that "words can't bring you down". It is, indeed, a beautiful song.

So what is beauty?

As the quote says: Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.

Is there such thing as ugly? To me, no one is ugly. I find beauty in every one whether it be in appearance, personality or quality, but this is not the case for every one. I was having a conversation with my friend and she told me this:

"My aunt had a gathering and I wasn't in. All these ladies were trying to get their sons a wife. And you know what was the first thing they asked her? 'What's your niece's size?"

Wouldn't you feel offended?

There are so many perceptions of beauty in different cultures. Us foreigners to the culture, would not understand why beauty is defined in those instances. For example, how most of the Oriental Asian population under-go the "double eye-lid" surgery. They believe that having bigger eyes is prettier. Indians prefer wives who are fairer in skin tone (this was told to me by a friend of mine). Rebecca Poponoe in Fat: the anthropology of an obsession reports on the complex connection between fat, social status, prosperity and health in Niger. The following BBC report investigates the fattening of girls to enhance their marital chances in Mauritania. From these examples, you can observe how there are so many things that people define as beautiful (or not).

So, what exactly is the criteria for Beauty? How do we judge it? How do we define it? The obvious answer is that beauty is subjective to ones opinion. What i find interesting is how different cultures define it.

I shall start blogging a lil more regularly seeing that whenever I'm out of things to do I tend to go and do other useless things.

SO.....

Went out to town yday and decided to buy new duvet covers. Just for a change:) and MAN, does it make my room look so.... weird. To the point where I am going to decorate my wall with a photo montage that I've been meaning to do for a VERY long time. InsyAllah that'll be done soon:)

Kinda insignificant blog post but I promise (insyAllah) I'll have much more interesting blog posts:) I've a few in mind! This blog also NEEDS A HUGE ASS RE-VAMP! -very much like my room!

Sunny sunny wednesday

Hey y'all.

Since uni's started, every thing seems to be rocketing all over the place. Just on Monday I was already raiding the library for books and looking for online journals for my dissertation. It' CRAZY I tell you!

Go around uni and ask the third years who've dissertations due... we're all on the same boat. Keeping to strict schedules, keeping our noses in books, eyes strained on our laptop screens typing sentence after sentence. I wonder how it'd be like when the few deadline's approach?

In any case, uni's has been good so far despite the increased stress levels, heh. Had my first Jazz lecture yday. Met an Singaporean exchange student who then introduced me to 2 others. They found me interesting, coz I sounded very S'porean apparently LOL.

Also, my landlord gave me a new closet coz my other one was falling to pieces. This ones... bigger and it kinda scares me, HAHA. Though, my housemates say it suits my room's furniture better.. I guess coz my drawers are of a similar colour. Shrugs*

I've settled a few mix-ups in my Semester 1 timetable, alhamdullillah. Hopefully things will go smooth sailing this Semester, insyAllah. Looks something like this for now.. I've not added my Piano lessons yet. Teacher hasn't got back.

The Beginning of Year 3

Yes, so, I'm back in cold, wet and miserable Southampton =) It's the beginning of the Winter season as well, so weather is bound to be crap around this time.

I'm trying to sort out uni life at the moment. One module is missing from my timetable and I need to meet my supervisor for my dissertation so I can start my literature review. Doomed? I think so. InsyAllah, things will be alright once I get things started.

Uni's not even started and I'm freaking out!

Help pray for me, Masris and friends. You will always be in mine:)

Btw, do anyone of you have good music to recommend to me? Need to dust the cobwebs on my iTunes :)

I'm glad, I'm through to third year. So are my other friends. Congrats to the graduates who are now moving onto the new chapters of their lives. I've one more year, insyAllah, I'll do well. :)

I don't go online as much as I am now the driver of The Corner House i.e. the Shazali household. Drive the kids around and run errands for my parents. It's darn tiring but heck, I suppose I enjoy being able to drive... seriously though, it's a misuse of MY licence. At least I'm getting practice... too much of it. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

Apparently, I'm bad at balancing my life between family and friends. Who would've thought huh? I'd like to know who's saying this but heck, I can give a wild guess.

Yes, I am now back from the UK. It's been busy these past few days. Halima's in Brunei at the moment and I hope she's been enjoying herself:)

I've eaten my oh-so-yummy-yummy ambuyat that mummy makes:) Few other delicacies here and there. Still more to come but heck, I'm gonna be here for a while:)

I'll put up photos and stuff later on. Right now, I just felt like posting:) hehehe. So, will blog again soon:)

Alhamdullillah, second year is now over. Had my piano recital today and I'm glad that it's over. The slips were inevitable but yeaaah~ I had fun playing my pieces and I'm glad that the people who were there enjoyed it as well:)

I'm just glad I'm know officially free:) Just need to wait for results and be happy. Lol. Now, just need to do some laundry and packing so that I don't use the baju at all, haha.

I decided to blog randomly coz I've nothing else to do at the moment. Well, I've to get ready to meet my friend to buy ingredients. She wants me to cook rendang for her. I've become a catering service:P HAHA.

Need to get a few things for my dress I'm wearing for my recital. Can't wait til my performance:) I think I'm going to enjoy it:) Hopefully some of my friends will be there to watch it.

I've started packing a lil bit now. Haha. At least it's a start. When I say I've started, I've started packing MY baju. Which is what? One baju tidor, 2 dresses, 1 top and my 2 baju kurung. Clearly that's not enough to sustain my stay in back home. LOL.

Soon enough after my exam next week and some laundry, I'll be done packing :)

MANG 2014 ... EXAM

Today's the DAY! I FINALLY start my first exam! I'm probably one of the latest people to start -.-

In any case, I've become bored at looking and repeating my notes but I know I shouldn't actually take it for granted. I will probably look through them again after Zuhur. Which means, I should be getting lunch started some time soon!

1 June. Hmm. New month. Start of the month, it rains. It's a good sign I suppose, regardless what people think of it. Rain = good :) Best time to make duas as well!

I shall be sitting in that exam room for 3hrs at 15mins. Wow. seriously. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

Can't wait for it to be done. Can't wait to be able to play in the Turner Sims to my little audience of friends. Can't wait to go home:)

Life.

I've been thinking about what to do when I'm back home this Summer. There are a few on my check list but to be practical, I'm most likely going to pursue just a few of them.

Teach piano/violin when I'm back. I'd be able to make time for students since I'd mostly be free. Since I've a music room in my house (apparently) I can do that.
Brush up on my violin playing. Need to go see a teacher/mentor and ask him if he'd be available just to help me out with the basics again.
Work for a month? August most likely.
Go to KL and visit family.

Think I can handle all of that for now anyways. There's still so much I'd like to do. InsyAllah, some day soon, I'll make them happen :) Have a few ideas to throw out but I shall keep them to myself for now and wait for the opportune moment to bring them up:)

I've chosen my modules for third year as well.

Social Psychology (This was an option from Psychology since I didn't much like the other options)

Seems like I'd be rather 'specialised' in my management field, lol. Since my dissertation is on consumer behaviour with digital music, I thought it would be wise to choose modules that would help me with it.

I'm still keeping my options open to be honest. Only Allah knows where I'd be in 5, 10 years time:)

Exam is in 2 days! My work station is now the living room, lol. the amount of papers and stationary on the table, is hilarious.

Best get back to remembering equations! Will try to blog about something more interesting soon! Fauzi, I've not forgotten your article! Words shall be said about it next week, insyAllah :)

I've exactly a week til my accounting exam.

I'm not registering anything in my head.

I've looked at some of the past year papers, and some of the questions aren't even related to what we've learnt. Help?

Going to go through class questions and try to understand a lot more of the theory in the next few days before I start doing a past year paper that actually relates to my module. Sigh.

I pray and hope that I'll be fine.

I don't like Maths. I know it's just practice but... my mind can't deal with analysing numerical figures. Give me a theory to talk about and criticise about it, I'll be able to do it.

TIPS TO OVERCOME EXAM STRESS

Sitting exams is never easy, but there is no escaping them at university. Milkround.com has compiled a few positive tips to help you battle any stress and ease yourself through the exam periods. Remember, you'll be the one sitting the exam so you've got to take responsibility for your studying!

Find a revision style that works for you
No one revises in exactly the same way. A mixture of reading, talking, writing and testing could all be necessary so try to find out what works best for you so you can make the most of revision time.

Take time to relax
Although you might feel guilty not revising for every hour up until the start of an exam, too much studying can have a detrimental effect. Taking time out to relax for an hour or so will not only keep you calm, but will train you to remember key details when you return to the books.

Sleep!
The quiet of night time may seem like an ideal time to absorb information, however try not to stay up until the early hours as you might not be able to retain information you think is ingrained into your memory the next day. Talking about any stress you might be feeling is also the best way to overcome it.

I'm basically trying to keep sane at the moment. Can't seem to focus or work. Did some retail therapy online but I know I've to return them anyways, LOL.

Procrastination; The thief of Time.

I'm thinking the blog's gonna grow a few webs over the next few days/weeks seeing how it's exam period all over the world atm.

Just thought I'd do one before I totally disappear and come back with proper interesting blogs. I've a few up my sleeves. I'd like to thank Fauzi Said for giving me an article to blog about and insyAllah, that will be done:)

So what's been happening?

Saturday: BruSton Annual BBQ and Riverside Park.

It's a gorgeous park that I've yet to fully discover. It's a lil bit too cold, despite it being "Spring" at the moment, to go out and venture off into the wild. They've kayaking and canoeing! Even wall climbing:)

We were the most crazy people to actually have a BBQ in the rain. We're awesome like that. We still had fun anyways and the BBQ went accordingly:)

Yup, yup. We had loads of food. Lots of chicken, burgers, sausages. Played cards, football, HANDBALL and pretended we could play the guitar:) Oh and also, "cuci-mata" ;D HOTTIE ALERT;D All of us girls swooned after he was out of our sight. Yes, he was THAT hot. RAWR~

Sunday: Watched The Back-Up Plan with Halima. Twas supposed to be an ISOC sisters thing but she organised it too late (like, Friday) abut we decided to go anyways. Couldn't do work, at all. Was p'd off with my Stats assignment. So~ Out we went:) THEN came home and watched a Hindi movie til nearly 2am. Procrastination at its best:)

So now what? I put my head down and do as much work and studying as possible. I've not even started revision! I'm still trying to get all my written work done! My two final assignments are due on 24 May. Should be done with one of them soon, by this week maybe. Then start the other one simultaneously whilst fitting in my piano practicing times.

I've a few events this week as well, so you can imagine. Time management at it's best. LOL.

Speaking of which, my mgt lecture today was about our final year dissertation. We've got a deadline to submit our topic and title on 27 May. We're going to be allocated to our Supervisors either by this week or a few weeks time. Basically, every thing is set in stone and work needs to be done over the Summer.

Please pray for me and the others who are having exams and loads of deadlines.

Sasha's Update

Hello everyone!

I've been very very slack on updating this blog and I really do apologise for not posting up any updates. Sooooo.....I've decided to post an update.

I think the last time I blogged was when my Easter break first started, which was a LONG time ago. Here are some things which have happened since then:

Mummy and Mama came over to NZ. I flew to Hamilton to visit them and then Mummy and Mama flew to Dunedin to visit me. They stayed at my place and we had lots of fun together.
I've had two mid semester exams, which were for Cels and Chem.
I played for the Bruneian guy's futsal team, and we won for the first time. We lost last week though.
Attended a movie night held at Jon's place with all the other Bruneians. That was fun. We watched, "The Uninvited". It had a seriously unexpected ending.
Went with Debbie, the international coordinator at the Uni to listen to the University's collegiate orchestra. Will be joining them on tuesday to start rehearsing with them. Have to bring my cello with me now. :D
I made a New York Cheesecake. SO GOOD! Everyone who tired it really liked it as well.
I helped with the Malaysian/Bruneian Food festival. That was fun. We sold ALL the desserts we made. The onde-onde was sooooo yummy!
I attended the cultural night committee meeting to discuss about our performance on the 24th of July for International Cultural Night. Helped write the script and everything.
And finally....today, I went to the beach, playground and Cumberland Hall to spend time with my first year batch. :D We just talked and talked all day.

I hope everyone is doing well. I love and miss you all very much! Hope to talk to everyone soon. I am doing well Alhamdulillah. Didn't score too well on my CELS exam but I've gone to seek help already from my seniors. They were very kind to give me their tutorial notes and advice. I'm so grateful to have them around. Now I'm going to seriously put my head down and study.

Graduates and exam results

As many of you know, I'm a total disbeliever in exams. I find them irrelevant at times and apparently, so do some 58% of students and graduates in the UK. (This was a poll of 600, I know it's small but heck, at least it's something)

I read an article from Milkround.com, a website that gives me information on internships and summer jobs (I'm subscribed to it, lol), and it mentioned about graduate employers calling to scrap the 2.1 minimum for recruitment.

"Many graduate employers use a 2.1 degree as a benchmark for their recruitment: unless candidates have or are expecting a 2.1 degree they won’t even be considered for a role if they have desirable skills such as relevant experience.

When submitting applications online, 2.2 and third class degree graduates will often be rejected after an initial batch of screening questions, preventing them from giving evidence of their potential employability beyond academic achievement." (Milkround.com, 2010)

We all know that the professional life is constantly a competition and seems that nowadays they wants high 2.1s and first class degrees. Why is this the case?

Having high degrees, well, really good degrees imply that you are the best of the best, the creme de la creme, the winner. You've showed skills and intelligence... in your exams. Let's not forget, assignments and courseworks. Great.

So, tell me this. Why is it that some people who are in fact, the best of the best, the creme de la creme, the winner, are unemployed? What happened to being that finally cherry on the cake, living the dream of having a good job, that would definitely secure your future? You start to wonder, is it worth the hassle?

Personally, I think being ambitious wanting more out of life is beneficial. Shows you've aims in life and you constantly want to achieve something. However, the point of having good exam results is still in question.

Why is it that graduate employers want to get rid of the 2.1 minimum? Surely that would mean we'd have a less capable work force, no? People would be more relaxed because the competition isn't high. But that's just boring. Life without competition. Though, a spokesperson from a company, Centrica said:

"We do not have a 2:1 cut-off as we believe that accepting applications from graduates with a 2:2 or above will enable us to attract and assess a larger, more diverse graduate pool, especially as the value of a degree classification can vary from one institution to another. To secure the best talent for our business, we look beyond a degree classification; job history, activities and interests outside of university and competency based examples are just as important to show us that an applicant has skills beyond their degree."

Which I believe is the right way. There are many other things to consider when looking at a potential candidate. Aforementioned above, companies do not have the chance of seeing if the candidate that had a 2.2 has better qualities and skills than the 2.1 candidate.

You can always be book smart but if you're much more experienced being out in the field, there's a chance that you're better than these people, the 2.1s or the more educated even.

Living proof that book smart and university degrees don't matter? My one and only, beloved Grandmother. She had to stop schooling at grade 3 because her parents couldn't afford it. Now, she's running her own printing company and is doing very well, Alhamdullillah.

Who else?

Bill Gates. Ranked as the world’s richest person from 1995-2006, Bill Gates was a college drop out. He started the largest computer software company, Microsoft Corporation. Gates and his wife are philanthropists, starting The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a focus on global health and learning.

Simon Cowell. Simon Cowell started in a mailroom for a music publishing company. He has since become an Artist and Repertoire (A&R) executive for Sony BMG in the UK, and a television producer and judge for major television talent contests including American Idol.

Walt Disney. Having dropped out of high school at 16, Walt Disney’s career and accomplishments are astounding. The most influential animator, Disney holds the record for the most awards and nominations. Disney’s imagination included cartoons and theme parks. The Walt Disney Company now has annual revenue of $30 billion.

Need I say more? :)

This post isn't to tell you that you should stop uni altogether and drop out. It's just to emphasize my point on exams and how sometimes, it doesn't matter whether you've a great degree or not. You don't need to be the smartest person to be successful. You will always find your own way at succeeding:)

Bank Holiday Monday~

Yes, it's a holiday today anyways. The weather's been a lil rainy and cold. And to think it's Spring now. Pfft.

Lisa's been bugging me to blog... sadly, I don't have much to say really. Hmmmm..

I can tell you a few things that have highlighted my week:

Thursday: Had a scheduled ISOC meeting but hey-ho, not every one showed up. Annoying isn't it? Especially when every one is busy with studies: assignments and revision. Sigh. Needed to practice piano and work on my music self-assessment paper from my group presentation (which is finished now :D Printed it and will be handing it in tomorrow~)

Friday: Fizah's and Andrew's birthdays. Sent Zah a birthday card through the post. Hopefully it'll get to New Zealand in due course:P Went out and handed in my options form for third year. Hoping to get into Music Therapy and Community Music. Had to write a 500 word statement saying why i deserve to be in that module! MAFAN MAN! Watched 'Crazy Heart' at night and went to bed.

Saturday: went to the cinema and watched...

Yes. 3 movies:P It was tiring! lol. But heck, twas fun anyways. Managed to spend almost the whole day out. Movie marathon started at 2pm and got home around 11:45pm after dinner and all. Forgot my jacket so was friggin cold! Wore two layers at least. The movies were all good. Prefer the first Iron Man to the second. How to Train you Dragon was cute. Loved it:) Kick-Ass was, well... interesting to say the least. Had an impression on me, that's for sure. Twas gory:S but stupidly funny:P

Sunday: again, nothing much. Went out for piano practice at 3 and came home around 1030pm. Yes, I know. It's late but damn... I was playing the same piece repeatedly trying to get parts right for 3-4 hours. HARDCORE DRILLING MAN. Almost cried. I think I needed it anyways. I need to push myself a lot more. Especially since i've a month left. That's not enough time. Guess will be hermitting in the practice rooms whenever i can.

Monday: which is today. Finished my MUSI 2026 assignment aforementioned above. ALSO, had a hard time trying to get information for Halima's VISA to Brunei. Somehow Dad couldn't send the email to them. Checked online and that didn't help. Honestly, they SHOULD have all the required documents online. All links were faulty. Annoying. InsyAllah we'll be able to get the visa done before she leaves. If we could get the documents, we would've been able to do things a lot sooner instead of stressing about it now. The high commission's got a lot of things to do on their website. Possibly, procedures as well. But alas, I can't diss or rant about it. So I shall leave it at that.

Thats most of my daily things for now. Hopefully I'll be able to get my other assignment done for the coming Monday. Honestly, the work load. I pray that I'll be able to get every thing done, insyAllah :)

Things to look forward to this week?

A talk on Palestine. Basically, trying to raise awareness I think. Someone from the ISOC committee organised it.
BruSton annual picnic on Saturday:) Should be fun. Hopefully the weather will be good. Just need to layer it up i suppose and bring a blanket!

Other than that, not sure what else could be on the agenda but heck, we'll find out sooner or later;D I'll think of something good to post another time. This is just for lisa's benefit. seeing that she's so interested about my life atm:P hehe, I love you Sis~ ;D

That's how i feel whenever people ask me, two things:

Ok, well, I'm pretty sure all of you know my reasons for it. I've mentioned it in a few posts to be honest.

And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.

I'm aware that it's stated in the Quran that we've to guard our modesty but I believe that as long as you cover yourself decently and modestly, the hijab shouldn't be a problem. You carry yourself the right way, and do the right things then wearing a head scarf shouldn't be a problem. No?

Some people don't feel ready for it. I know I don't, though recently, I've constantly been thinking about it. People keep saying that you don't have a reason NOT to wear it, so, why not wear it?

When my time comes, it'll come. Whether I wear it or not, only Allah can judge us in the end. Not these people who think they're better than you simply because they wear the hijab. Not all are, btw, I'm just saying.

What's a girl to do yeah? lol. InsyAllah. Time will tell :)

I'm basically tired. I want a proper break. It's sad that the 260th post is a boring rant from me. Sadly, since last weekend, things have gone downhill (I say all of this and it's still Monday, HAHA).

I think I'm just stressed out with the mini concert happening tomorrow. I've tried practicing but heck, I'm just going to play through it and see how it goes.

I've a group meeting tomorrow for our presentation this Thursday. First time rehearsing it. Wish us luck? 25%. So, me thinks its a big deal. Hmm...

I feel like fasting. Thursday, maybe. Should've fasted today really. Sigh sigh.

Thinking of module options. Thinking of taking an alternate subject: Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology? Help? I've emailed the Psychology department. Might just go and get option forms from the school of social science and see what I can go for.

I need sleep. I need to jog tomorrow morning to let off some steam.

Hey y'all.

Had the most amazing night last night with my ISOC Sisters. Went out to the docks and climbed onto a roof and star gazed:) It was the most amazing and beautiful thing. The Azura, which is a cruise ship, was docked as well.

I should've brought my camera. The view was GORGEOUS. Took that from Wasifa's phone camera:)

Purrty aint it? hehe.

Netball tomorrow at 12:) Can't wait. Haven't seen them Bruneians in a while.

Why am I not sleeping? Watching Paranormal Activity... Halima's sleeping beside me, lol. I should be scared shitless right now. HAHA.

Lisa posted a blog which was taken by a man called Tawfik Hamid. I was appalled at what it stated but agreed to the few things he's mentioned. If you want to know what the article is, read it at this link:

Firstly, I'd like to say that as a born Muslim, I myself know that I've strayed by not praying as much as I should in the past and not understanding the true meaning of Islam. Alhamdullillah, now, I've come to realise a totally different feeling. I feel, happier.

Yes, I have changed but change comes a long way and it has to come from within. Tawfik Hamid speaks of change to the fellow Muslim community, which I believe, is true. We need to change, we need to make others understand our situation.

I don't know about him (Tawfik H.) but where he sees Islam, is totally different. How many people call the Jews "Descendants of the pigs and monkeys?" I hardly hear these harsh words. I, and many other people live amongst a society which is multicultural, different religions, just, different. I live in a house with a Nigerian, Indian and Pakistani. We tolerate with each other, in fact, we've grown to love each other as a family.

The Islam that he speaks about, is NOT Islam. I honestly believe that we are not taught that way. Society should look to the source, the Holy Quran and REALLY know what we (Muslims) are truly about.

People who preach about disliking the infidels (non-believers) or any non-Muslim are giving wrong teachings. This is why, these people (preachers) who speak of Islam wrongly bring us (Muslims) in a bad light. The Quran doesn't teach us to speak ill of other religions and other people. Allah made different people from different backgrounds, religions so that we live harmoniously with each other and tolerate one another. If we were all the same, what life would that be? Only Allah knows.

He brings up the issue on the "hijab" or head scarf. This issue, I'm absolutely tired and sick of it. Yes, it does state in the Quran that woman should cover themselves to protect themselves. For people who read this, I do NOT wear the hijab. I know it's contradictory for me to speak about when I myself do not use it. Let me break it down:

I don't wear it because...

(1) I don't feel that it's my time to. Some people can just wear it and it seems almost second nature to put the hijab on. I admire the women and girls who wear it correctly and not wear it half-heartedly.

(2) As I'm not in the right state of mind to wear it, I don't think I should. I'm still trying to properly discover myself and re-learn what I was taught in religious school donkey years ago. InsyAllah, when it IS my time, I shall wear it and wear it with the right heart and the right mind.

I see some people who wear it and they're doing things that you're not supposed to or they wear it but their clothing is inappropriate. But I'm digressing...

Tawfik H.'s point of the hijab in France and how we protested with so much passion to not have the ban. I despise the terrorist bombers who think they are doing it for the sake of Allah. Allah gave us jihad or struggle but the jihad wasn't to kill non-Muslims and non-believers. The jihad comes from yourself, you have jihad every day. Your own struggles are your tests in life, no matter how big or small they are.

With regards to people thinking that Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h was a pedophile. This is a very big issue and I for one cannot actually answer it. We were all taught that she was indeed married to him at a very young age. I wish I knew more on this but, I'll have to leave this issue.

Talking about polygamy and men beating women.

Polygamy, yes, men are allowed to marry 4 wives ONLY IF they are able to treat them all equally, mostly speaking in financial terms. Also, from the beginning of the marriage, they are able to put into the wedding contract that they (the husband) are not allowed to have more than one wife. So really, it's up to the couple to decide on the issue of polygamy. I don't believe in it but we Muslims, know it's there.

Beating women in Islam. People clearly do not read the Quran properly. Things are taken out of context which is why people look at it differently. In different parts of the Quran, they mention "beating" but people do not refer as to HOW they are supposed to "beat" their women. It says "strike" in the Quran as well. How did Prophet Muhammad PBUH say to "strike"? To pick up a handful of grass and throw it at her. Another is to just tap her. How many of you think that grass is painful? not at all is it? And when you tap some one, does that hurt? no, it doesn't. So please, PLEASE read these little parts of the Quran that are missed. I've to add that people of other religion beat up their wives. Tell me about the wife beating situation in India? They burn them! Loads of women are admitted to hospitals because their husbands mistreat them. Domestic violence DOES exist. SO why focus particularly on Islam when clearly EVERY ONE ELSE does it.

There are so many issues with Islam in general that people pick on and blow up. I know that we as Muslims do have to change. We have to change how people view us because the media only like hearing the bad and not the good. We have to change our attitudes towards how we handle situations because our religion is reflected upon our actions. Smile at people, do good things for them, be nice to them, in other words, be a good Muslim. The way that is SHOULD be.

People should stop harassing us and just go about their own lives. Religion and faith is between you, yourself and God. No one else. At the end of the day, only Allah knows best and He is merciful. I wish that people would stop judging us and discriminating against us.

Tawfik H. wants to know if Christians pray for us? I experienced being discriminated against on the train. I felt so angry but kept my cool. A man kept talking about not going down the path of Muslims that "you don't wanna go there. you don't wanna be like those Muslims" and said "to read the Bible." and "to now discriminate and judge them (Christians)". how the heck do you tolerate with someone who speaks of garbage and is clearly being a hypocrite himself? Sure, I'm going to say that he is a minority but I'm sure there are people out there just like him. Who discriminate against us, who despise us. And I won't lie, I'm sure there are Muslims who do discriminate against these people but they should know that it's not the way of Islam to deal things. Like I've mentioned before, we tolerate with each other.

Joining ISOC has made me more aware of these things and Alhamdullillah, it's all a good experience. I've learnt so much and I'm sorry that I've just made a ranty post about this. I just felt like putting in my views.

I'm sorry if any thing that I've said is wrong and I'm sorry if I've offended anyone.

May Allah help and guide us all.

The Take Over. The Breaks Over.

Yes, sadly Easter is now over. From tomorrow, I start uni again. I'm so not ready. I need another week! Falling ill has been the biggest draw back from this 'break'. I've been spending my time trying to recooperate and recover and not enough time doing work. InsyAllah I'll get every thing done.

Despite being ill during the break, it's been good. Went to places, had new experiences with new people, met old friends. Who wouldn't say it was good? :)

The sun is out and Southampton is back to being the best place in the UK! Lol. Though it's supposedly going to be cloudy the next few days and possibly some rainy intervals as well. Heck, as long as there's sun, i'll be smiling:)

The housemates are back home and it's good to have 'noise' again. To be fair, I've not been alone at home anyways. I've had Hinnah sleep over the past two nights since I got back from London and it's been fun:) It's always nice to have company when you're ill and in general.

It's back to the books and being the book worm and ever more nerd.

I need to focus. I'm some how lacking motivation but I'll feel the pressure soon.

Easter break. Is almost over.

Well well, I'm a little UNwell at the moment but speaking to the family makes up for it:)

I've pretty much have told you what I've been up to. I guess it's just time for some photos:)

Didn't take photos in Leicester mainly coz I was certain some sisters wouldn't want to be in the pictures. PARIS on the other hand, I did and most of the pictures are from other people's cameras anyways. I took some photos so I'll just post them up here:)

The rest are disney land photos that I didn't take. lol. But yeah, roam around through my facebook and have a look:) I didn't take many photos BECAUSE other people had better cameras, lol.

As of now I'm still trying to recover and get well. Made Chicken Ginger Soup last night. Hinnah and Wasifa came over and bought me food. Twas very sweet of them:)

Need to go out and buy some honey and top up my Gas before it runs out:P

Pray that I get well soon! And that I'll be able to get all my assignments done.

Easter Break is here!

I can't believe that it's already been a month since I first started Uni and ALREADY I'm on holiday! WOW~

It's been quite a month I must say and Uni is really nothing like High School at all. But nevertheless, it's still fun :D

To celebrate the month's worth of hardwork and stress, some Bruneian girls and I went to a Karoake bar called Vi.va.ce. I felt quite disgusted and nervous about going in because the place from the outside really looked like a run-down, old place but to my surprise it wasn't. You would not have been able to guess how nice it was inside if you were looking from it through the outside. Seriously~

We karoaked for 2 hours non-stop. Sakit lihir sudah. GILA! haha. Danced abit, made a fool of ourselves but it was all good. There was a disco ball lagi, which switched on when ever a new song started. We even had our own private room :D How cool is that?!

After the singing and dancning, Lee Sher, Nisah and I spontaneously decided to jog home from the place. SO CRAZY!!! We actually made it without stopping (besides traffic-light stops). Tomorrow, we're going to be attempting to cook Chicken Rice since we all are craving for it and I'll be playing in a futsal match as well in the evening for the guy's team. They need atleast one girl to play in the Uni league. :S I'm really rusty but I'm just going to go there and have fun! :D

Can't really go anywhere tomorrow because it's Easter Friday. EVERYTHING is going to be closed even the supermarket. Owh wells~ That's alright. Looking forward to seeing mummy on tuesday! YAY! :D

Ah yes, it is indeed, Tuesday. And I'm disappointed with myself and the amount of work that I'm doing. I scanned my music for my Production commentary yesterday but, the actual writing bit, I've not even started -.- I NEED TO GET ON WITH IT.

I've a few things to look forward to:

Kaka Nina's coming TOMORROW! Will be taking her to town and around Soton. Hopefully the weather will look up tomorrow, insyAllah~
JIMAS conference on friday with the ISOC girls:) I need to pack for that. Do some ironing possibly:S
PARIS next Tuesday with the BruSton's and the best friend:D
LONDON the following Tuesday to see Michelle van de Griend from AMSTERDAMMMM~
CONCERT in LONDON with Ka Nina. I'm dragging her to a Classical Concert in Royal Festival Hall on the 15th:) It's going to be good~ There's another one I'd like to go to but it's the day after I get back from Paris, so. No.
THORPE PARK with the ISOC committee on the 17th. POSSIBLY a sleep over for the Sisters at mine;D

Wow, just realised how many events I've coming. Which means that I've to pick up my pace with my work. It's terrible. Sigh. InsyAllah I'll get things done.

Yesterday! Muizz cooked us a swell meal of roasted leg of lamb, roasted potatoes and salad:) I brought the desserts:) Came over early to watch him cook it. Entered the house with a gorgeous aroma of garlic and herbs. NYAMAN! (if Saze's reading this, YUMMY!)

He roasted the lamb, the potatoes and we waited for the food to cook. Watched TV, played Kings of Fighters:P It was stressful with lots of screaming, yelling and hitting involved:P It was, an awesome night;D

BEG '10 weekenddd

Alluuuu~

I'm in cloudy ol' Soton atm. Was supposed to go jog but was too tired. I know bad excuse, i did get up at 5:11am to relieve myself:P And to be fair, I didn't get enough sleep during the weekend:P So my jog shall start in the afternoon today, insyAllah. Hopefully the weather will pick up.

ANYWAYS, BEG:) It was a great experience for all of us. I think a 'Well Done' goes to all BruSton players. We did well considering we only just started our netball training. We scored in all of our games at least and drew 2. We were pretty happy with our outcome:)

I've grabbed a few photos from others coz, well, i stupidly forgot my camera -.-

It was fun:) Saw Eleena supporting the BruKeeles football team. Met my dearest cousin, Fatin:) Should've gone down to Birmingham from Notts -.- Wanna go there. Nanti lah:) hehe. After exams mayyyyyyyyyyyybe?

Obviously, stayed over at my best friend's place:) Aaron had the luxury of my Rendang but sadly, he couldn't taste it. Damam -.- he had lalap tho:) haha. He made me choco muffins too:) nyamannnn~ they sustained me throughout my train journey yesterday! lol.

In any case, it's good to be home:) I don't think my body's adjusted to the time. I still feel sleepy. It should be 9.44am but the clocks have gone forward again. zZzZz.

I also know that the Shazalis are now in KK having fun in Sutera Harbour! Jealous much! WHEN I GET BACK! LOL. Jangan lupa blog ah LISA! Love and miss you all!

Home Alone..........

Salams every one,

Had a pretty good day. Went for a Business Simulation at uni: Enterprise Skills for Employability - Demonstrating Business Understanding to Prospective Employers. It was fun:) I'm glad went for it. Learnt loads of things. Teamed up with these two nice girls that I happened to just talk to when getting there. Ruth, from Essex and Sarah from Italy, Florence:) I made an effort to remember:)

Anyways, what happened was that we were Retail companies that had to negotiate with our Manufacturers and constantly be on the ball with our business from month to month. Our time constraint wasn't the weakness of the exercise but had we had more time, we would've been able to save our company. We were making good profit up til May and we just made losses from then on. Mainly coz our Inventory management was bad. Learnt many other things out of the simulation. I'd love to go for another one.

A few things have happened.. Last weeeeeeeeeeeeeek:

17 Mar: Rakhi's birthday

Went to Tang's for lunch and just hung out in town. Had fun:)

After that, I mentioned in the previous post that I'd the ISOC AGM. So yeah, had to rush to that afterwards. Drama happened but heck, that's the least of my worries now. Coz it's OVERRRR and I know that my work was appreciated:)

Had dinner with the ISOC sisters as well that night. Impromptu dinner:)

Mar 18: ISOC and CU Girls Evening

It was our first time having an interfaith social. So far as Ruth and I are concerned, we were successful, Alhamdullilah:) Hopefully, we'll be able to hsot more events like this:) Played games such as Charades, Irish Snap, Uno.. whilst others did Henna.

19 Mar: Jin's 20th

Went over to jolly ol' Canterbury to visit Jin for his 20th. Met up with Andrew and Denise for dinner at Pizza Express. Pretty filling dinner only coz he had vouchers to pay for the dinner. So, we kinda stuffed ourselves. Andrew and I were hoping to have dessert. Sadly, we were too full. I didn't even finish my pizza -.-

It was a good night:) Walked around the city centre like idiots, TRIED partying in the parking lot and ignored the camera directly above us completely. The boys were nuts. Denise and I were just tired. So we had to tolerate their behaviour. Tsk. Boys will be boys I suppose :P

Well, that's it from me for now anyways. Meeting up with Jacob tomorrow for lunch at Natraj:) Time for some Indian food! hehe. Apart from that, I should start actual uni work before I head off to Notts for BEG and see my bestie, Aaron Liew:D

What do I do now? It is only 10pm. It's the holidays. Housemates aren't in.

Finish reading up on Superfreakanomics :)

I'm planning to read up on as many books this holiday. Mainly just to pass the time productively. Sigh.

Cuti-cuti Briiiiitaaaaaiiiin~

Yes, starting tomorrow, I start my Easter holidays:) Sadly, loads of work needs to be done over the 4 weeks that I'm on holiday. I've 6 assignments due in after the holidays and a mini piano concert. Fun eyh?

I've been meaning to do a post for quite some time now but I've always managed to prolong it and end up not doing it. The number of times I open this web page and start to think of something to write, I end up being occupied with something else.

So~ What's been happening in Southampton? Loads.

Last week ISOC had Islamic Awareness Week. Where we had talks and exhibitions on Islam. It was a fun experience but having to get up early and coming home 10-11pm every day... wasn't exactly my cuppa tea. But Alhamdullillah, every thing went well :)

Daddykins was also around last week:) Had to juggle time between ISOC and Father-Daughter time. I managed pretty well:) Basically did the usual, shopping for Lisa, Mum. Our usual 'spot' in M&S Cafe, having lunch/tea. It was good.

Apart from Daddy, Eleena and Hafiy were over as well! So, we went out and I brought them sight seeing around Soton. It was a beautiful day:) DAYS for that matter:) They were lucky to have such good weather. Picturesque spots. Sigh. I need the photos from Eleena....

I've had an AGM. I'm no longer Social Secretary for ISOC. My dearest Halima is now taking over that position. I'm sure she'll do me proud:) However, I'm SECRETARY for ISOC. HAHA. They nominated me -.- I guess I can't get out of it eyh? :P All in the name of Allah, I suppose;)

Next week its Brunei Easter Games (BEG) in Notthingham. Soton netballers are going to try our best and compete. We're not bad for beginners but heck, we're there for the experience, not to win. But if we DO win a match then, heck, we're cool;D LOL.

I should really be sleeping or doing something else but I refuse to work since I've not rested properly since Uni started. Honestly, work just piles, reading... InsyAllah, I'll get there:)

It's 12am atm. Why am I up? I don't really have anything tomorrow til late. And I was working on a video montage for ISOC. Sami, the president, called me up in the evening asking me about it. Luckily I'd started already... So I really just needed to finish it.

Daddy's coming to Soton on Sunday. Eleena and Hafiy are coming on Saturday. Islamic Awareness week is on Monday. BUCS is next weekend. MANG 2008 Assignment due Mon 15 March. SO HAPPENING! :P There are more events... zZzZz...

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

I just finished reading a book The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Pretty interesting read. It's about a man who's from Pakistan who went to the US for college in Harvard and ended up in a good job as an analyst in one of the most sought after companies in the States. His love for a Western woman, who is still in love with her deceased childhood best friend. Changez [is the name of the protagonist] faces all sorts of difficulties. I doubt any one of you would want to be in the States when 9/11 happened, especially when you're a Pakistani.

Anyways, why i brought this book up is because, there is a quote in there that i think is very true:

"If you have ever, sir, been through the break up of a romantic relationship that involved great love, you will perhaps understand what I experienced. There is in such situations usually a moment of passion during which the unthinkable is said; this is followed by a sense of euphoria at finally being liberated; the world seems fresh, as if seen for the first time; then comes the inevitable period of doubt, the desperate and doomed backpedaling of regret; and only later. once emotions have receded, is one able to view with equanimity the journey through which one has passed."

The trials and tribulations one goes through when in a relationship, or even in life... once you've reached that state of euphoria and stability, yes, you look at things differently. I for sure, know that I have. And I think of it as a blessing:)

I've been trying to get through life as such since it happened and I thank my family, friends and for most, Allah, for helping me. My feelings are mutually shared with a few people that I know of. It's life and we all deal with it:) Alhamdullillah I've been feeling a lot better nowadays and I know it takes a while to get over it.

In a way, I'm learning to be myself again. Not to worry about some one else's well being. I'm finding myself again and, insyAllah, gradually, I will:)

What gets me annoyed is all the footprints that have been left. The memories. Nostalgia gets to you in so many ways that.. it angered me today. I felt resentful. All I could do was calm myself down with prayers and trying not to think of it so much. Every where I go, I can relate to him. I brought him to my favourite places. Shared with him the sceneries that I enjoy. Now, wherever I walk, I see him. New memories need to be made but, in due time... this phase will shift.

My lack of posts is mainly due to my busy schedule and me trying to sort of myself. I've been really good:) alhamdullillah. It's been what? a few weeks? Feelings are still there but really, the only thing i can say is that i do miss him. Other than that, I'm alright:)

SOOOOOOOOOO, for BETTER news.... I got good results for my first semester:) Alhamdullillah. Called the parents up and told them. Went to London to see Ka Nina as a little treat to myself:) I just need to be consistent and do well in my second semester as well... and throughout my university years that I have left.

This post isn't what I wanted.. but seeing that I felt like i needed to type my feelings out. I did. I promise the next posts that I do will be jovial with loads of photos and total awesomeness;)

It is now time for Isyak:) After that, DINNER:D lol.

I'm hoping you guys can see it. My Preliminary lectures were great yesterday. Tonight I've got a National Day Dinner to attend and tomorrow I'll be meeting up with some Bayfield friends for the afternoon.

My flatmate, Lee Sher, cooked lunch for us today. So nyaman! She cooked curry ayam with rice. YUM!!

Alright, so I've been told by Mummy and Daddy to get new curtains and blinds for my room. To be honest, looking for curtains was the hardest part because I wanted something that would match my room and look nice.

Since I didn't have Mummy with me to advise me on colour and pattern and all, I had to find something all by myself and that in itself wasn't easy at all. So I decided to call Ayumi, my good friend from Bayfield to join me on this spectacular mission.

Here's what we found:
Some of you might be asking why I arranged the curtain like that. It's because I bought the WRONG size so I had to Improvise. I'm getting used to them like that because it offers abit more privacy which is good since my room window is facing the road. As for finding a way to tie it up so it wouldn't go crazy...I used bangles. Didn't know what else to do and I didn't really want to spend more money on curtains.

I've also "kinda" decoraded my room with photos. Since I couldn't find frames for every photo, I used album stick on paper.

Hands in the air, hands in the air!!! Cause guess what?! Today I successfully cooked vegetarian Noodles:D Yay~

OK, some of you may be thinking, "What in the world" but I've not cooked noodles on my own before (only mee goreng), so it felt good that I accomplished such a dish with the help of Nisah who guided through the process.
The noodles came out quite alright. I was happy with them:D Next dish in mind...PASTA~ YUM!!!

Here are some photo uploads of my room. I should've taken a picture of my room before I cleaned it with dad but it doesn't matter.

Just have to imagine another mattress in the room, boxes everywhere. Cat fur all over the place, dead flies on the bed, a clothing rack for drying your clothes at the door, shoes at random places of the room. Lets just say it was UGLY!

Uni Year!!!

Hey guys!

Before I start, I think I should apologize for not blogging for so long and leaving this blog in the hands of Ka.Sof who has been continuously updating everyone...unlike lazy me:P

What's new with Shazrinah Shazali? Well, I'm going to Uni this year. Where? No better than the University of Otago to do a Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience, which is in Dunedin, New Zealand as well.

This year I decided not to stay with my former host family for many reasons,
1. Because they lived too far from the Uni, which mean I'd have to take the bus to Uni when ever I had lectures on. This would be really troublesome if there wasn't a bus arriving at a certain time I needed to go.
2. I didn't want to stay with kids because I really wanted to put my head down and study without any distractions.
and 3. I wanted to learn to be fully independant to ready myself for the tougher years bond to approach me.

So where am I staying now? I'm staying in a flat which is 3-5mins walk away from the University with 2 other Bruneians, Nisah and Lee Sher. Both whom are doing Dentistry (boleh dapat free check-up ni). I've already been told off by Nisah because I don't floss and also for drinking Juice because it's acidic and can stain your teeth. For those you use mouth wash, don't use Listerine because it's only flavouring and it doesn't contain a chemical which really cleans out your mouth and not to mention, it STAINS your teeth as well. (Mummy and Daddy, this is a warning from the Dentistry student. BE ALERT AND AWARE!!)

On thursday when I arrived in Dunedin, Dad and I went to the Uni just to sign me in. It was so complicated because they needed this and that and we had to go up and down to sort the things out. After that was done, we went to the flat so dad could "check-it-out". I had to warn dad about the cat smell due to the former tenant who had a cat here for 2 years and never let him outside.

The next day (yesterday), Dad and I woke up late. We were supposed to be at the Uni before 8.30am but instead reached there at 10 past. We dropped my stuff off at my flat first then walked to the uni.

Course Approval is one hectic thing. As an international student, you have to go to the international side first, sort out some documents then only can you do course approving. The line at the Neuroscience area was so long. When it was my turn, I cancelled one of my papers which was STATS because they said that they don't usually advise students to take 5 papers in one semester. That was fine with me. When that was done, I had to get it checked. Unfortunately, when they cancelled my stats paper they didn't sign it to verify the change. So then I had to go all the way back and line up AGAIN! Haiya~

After that was done, I had to get it checked again, then line up to register myself and the papers I was taking for finalise my course. Then I had to make my ID. I lined up in the line for don't know how long. When it was my turn, the lady said I can't do mine today because all the first years data hasn't fully uploading into the software. So she issued me a piece of paper and wrote "first in line". Atleast now I don't have to worry about lining up anywhere. HOORAY!

The best part of yesterday was cleaning my room and buying stuff for it, i.e, pillows, duvets, bed sheets and all. Daddy was so cute, wanting to clean everywhere and spraying the house with lots of "Fresh" air freshener. Dad even put Green tea oil on my floor. It was like a scene from the exorcist. HAHA. "Devil child, devil child!" But this time to the cat smell. :P Dad even farted in my room before we left saying, "Nah, something for you to remember." Haha.

When we said our goodbyes at the motel, I didn't cry but felt a sense of loneliness knowing that Dad was going and I wouldn't have that Father-daughter time together until I see daddy again in perhaps November. It's weird how when we feel lonely, most of us counter that feeling by working harder and setting our minds straight into wanting to succeed for the better. Or maybe that's how Mum and Dad raised us to be. I'm not so sure.

Anyhow, this Sasha's DAY 1 in flat and so far, everything is going well. Don't worry Mummy!

Why can't we all just get along?

I had a huge pang of annoyance and anger yesterday from the news I heard from housemates of mine. I am glad that I'm not affected by this... finger-pointing and terrorising of the Muslim community. Why? Simply because I don't wear a hijab or tudong (head scarf). I think it unfair for people of other religion or lack of it, to behave so barbarically and not feel guilty for their actions.

What did they do?

Vandalised my friend's sister's car and the other fiance's car. The car window was smashed and burned, in the case of the former. As for the latter? They stole all gadgets, widgets, anything tech, in his car before smashing it. I saw photos. It ain't a pretty sight. I felt sorry the people affected and angry for the idiots who did it. This happened in the UK and the US.

Why is it that they are targeted? I don't see what they have done, what WE have done to make minorities of communities act this way. For all I know, we have been living next to you peacefully and we have not disrupted your way of life whatsoever. If you think we're all terrorists and suicide bombers, then, I think your perspective of us, us Muslims, are wrong.

What makes them think they can do such acts? After living as neighbours for so long, why now? What gives them the incentive, the need, the right to do it? The news? Propaganda? Are people suddenly saying that Islam is bad and you should make their lives difficult? Are they trying to make a point? If so, what IS the point? There is no good in burning and smashing up honest peoples cars, making petitions/polls on not allowing Muslim women to wear the hijab any more, discriminating against us when even we don't know what we did wrong.

Ever since I've been here, the Brunei bubble has popped. That safety net that I grew up in, is gone. The world is an ugly place. I know there are the beautiful places where every one lives amongst each other harmoniously, we just have to look.

Heal the world,

Make it a better place.

And the entire human race.

Yes, I am done:) I've not used my laptop the whole day hence why i've not actually blogged about my end to semester 1 exams.

So how does it feel? pretty good:) Ended with a good paper that I hope I did will in. Pray for me:) and I shall do the same:)

Gonna get my hair done tomorrow at 10am. Gotta sleep and get up for it. Lalala. Time for me to start my relaxation. Catch up on some reading and watch a hell lotta movies:)

I wish I had $10 million atm. I was chatting to Shaz just now and realised where most of my money is going off to!

And maybe music. Ok ok, fine~ yes, music as well.

I don't feel quitly. not at all. YEAH RIGHT! I do, and I'm now not allowed on Amazon or to iTunes Store for the next month or so. I've to save up for my supposed trip I'd like to make on my birthday. I think I'm allowed to spoil myself? Right? I'm just going to have a sudden influx of books on Tuesday:P The delivery people must think I'm nuts or something. Well, books are food for the mind, so i don't see how i'm wasting money:) lol.

Anyways~ I slept at 8am this morning.. Why? I waited to watch the mandi bunga ceremony of my sister. I cannot believe how fast every one is growing up.They're no longer kids. Idk how to refer to her.. she is no longer 'little'. Sigh, wish I was there but heck, at least I was some what there:P

ahh, the beauty of becoming a woman. my dad's going to have a hard time having all that female hormones around the house! lol. Can't wait to see every one again=')

Right, I've done enough procrastination. I must return to my revision. I've not touched it at all today. Why? i did sleep at 8am. Got up 12. Had breakfast/lunch.. cleaned the house. Dillydallied.. no, chatted to Shaz, showered, bought Gas for the house and now I'm here...

I'm taking a quick break to share this with you guys.

I think the previous tenant in our house in wanted by the police:P A ring on the door bell at 9pm isn't attractive to a house of 4 girls unless we ordered take out, lol. To my surprise, it was the police! This is the second time they have asked for the same person. David XYZ.. It's a very long Polish name that even the police officer didn't want to try saying:P

I'm beginning to think it won't be the last of our little police visits for this David guy. At least it makes this house more interesting:P hahaha.

Right, back to work:)

At the moment, I'm just in bed. Got up early today to give in my music essay and did some piano practice. I have basically been chillaxing the whole day. Felt good to have my mini-break:) Especially when I'd be doing revision throughout tomorrow until monday for my exam on tuesday. Can't wait for them to be over. I should've planned to go some place exotic or foreign after exams. Next time, next time.

I actually would like to do a few things whilst I'm in the UK. Should have done it in my first year but I guess you learn over time that you are so close to absolutely beautiful countries that are culturally rich and that you MUST travel and see them. That is one of my things to, Travel. I know I mentioned it in my previous post. I guess I'm emphasizing the fact for my yearning to get out and see all these places. I shall soon make a checklist of places I need to go to and why:) Might do that after my exams on tuesday actually. Hmmmm...

Idk what to do at the moment. Watch another movie or read a book and fall asleep. I like the latter option:) Besides, I'd need to get up and make my brainstorm notes for my exam. Hardcore revision! lol.

Sweets for my sweets

It's a lovely afternoon in Soton. Well, it IS sunset at the moment. I think my azan on my laptop did go off so I'm assuming it's already sunset:P

Done with Human Resource Management. Alhamdullillah. One more paper to go. Need to fix up my music business essay and hand it in tomorrow.

Currently, I'm on the phone with Aaron whilst he is baking and Halima and I are looking for holidays destinations. I really want to go some where for my birthday this year. I need to travel OUTSIDE of the UK. I'm getting fed up of waiting for people to go to places I want to. I should just go. Nothing should hold me back and nothing will:) So as of now, I'm keeping a travelling fund:) Every month I'm going to save money to go travel and be adventurous:)

It's 5pm and I should've been some what done with my essay and sleep some what early and get up early to give it in. Ah wells, I'm procrastinating to the max.

On other thing... CONGRATS to my lovely sister, Shaz for getting accepted into Otago Uni:) I knew you could do it. You can do anything:) I love you and I'm proud of you:)

I am done with Conducting for the Semester anyways. Just got off speaking to the family. Miss them:) My crazy bunch of people:)

The exam went alright I guess. Though, a second violin player was a bar ahead and ruined one part bt he mouthed "sorry" to me whilst he was playing. I just laughed, like the other players did as well. Ah well, things happen in exams... At least twas a funny one:) And they had to cut me short as well coz some one went over their time. Dang... and i thought i could get the ritardando part right the second time. I'm pretty sure the players forgot they had to do it. Except for the flautist, she remembered:)

It's slightly gloomy today and was drizzling. Sad. But heck, exams wouldn't be complete with out bad weather:)

I'm going to go study for tomorrows paper and try to sleep early. Which i think i will. Woke up at 4am this morning for no reason. Bathroom maybe? Anxiety? Whatever it was, it got me tired -.-

I'm exhausted. I think I'm starting to feel my exam anxiety kicking in.. I need to take my medication:S

Hate being such a nervous wreck during exam time.. during ANY TIME I'm put under pressure. It's all in my head. I need to focus. FOCUS.

I just need sleep. I'm so tired. I want to speak to the Shazalis. I need some familia loving:(

Piano class was a disaster. But picked up in the end. Tutorial meeting with Andrew was productive but damn, now I need to make amendments to my essay before Friday. I guess I can't really relax after my exam on Thursday. Sucks.

1 day: Conducting

2 days: HRM paper

7 days: Org and Mgt paper

I need to pray.

PS: The garbage men finally came today:) Heard them at 8am. Have been up since then.. mistook the time on my phone to be 9am.. I need a rest.

Don't Stop Believin'

I've got up early and am going to start on my studying pretty soon. Started a question on a pyp. Then I resulted to re-reading up the case study the question was asking me about. Then I got annoyed with the revision notes or brainstorms rather that I made.. So I stuck them on my wall instead. At least this way, when I've nothing to look at, I'd look at them instead.

Hopefully I'll get the info in my head every time I look at it:P

Also, I've rearranged my room:) I now have more space! lol. My housemates approve of the arrangement. Thank you to those who helped me;D Excuse the mess....

Oh, there is ONE thing that's bugging me at the moment. The rubbish collectors have NOT collected our rubbish. Our bins are pouring with plastic bags of our rubbish. This has accumulated since 2 weeks ago when the snow was around. Now that there ISN'T any, they have no excuse to not come.

Hmm, actually.. the snow was a HUGE reason as to why people didn't want to do anything. I was one of them:P Mainly for Goju Ryu. It was cold and I just didn't want to trod on some thing so hazardous! You can slip and hurt youself:P But other than that, housing agencies [or A housing agency] cancelled on us because the landlord couldn't get into the house due to snow. BS. The other housing agency that saw us was able to drive around fine. Other housing agencies too. But urgh, whatever. We're thinking of keeping the current house.. Hopefully the last girl will actually agree. The three of us can't be bothered to move and just want to stay. It is just for another few months. 3rd year will zip by so fast, we'd be graduates (insyAllah) in a blink of an eye!

Right, me thinks I'm going to Teso to buy washing up liquid and probably some other stuff for the house. I'm getting annoyed with the fact that no one's actually got the initiative to go out and buy a few things when Tesco's just around the corner. I guess I'm the only one that's getting irritated about it. Ah wells.

I also read my uni mail today... And was surprised it said this:

"Dear Student

Your Semester 1 Examination results will be available from the corridor in front of the security guard, in Avenue Campus, on Friday 26 February, between 10.00am and 11.00am."

Why do they have to scare us like this?! Lol. I guess I've to scribble that date into my organisor:P

I need to start studying properly by 12. I've 45 minutes.
